The Great Nipple Debate
My preference for my upcoming surgery is to have reconstruction immediately at the same time as my mastectomy. One surgery equals one recovery. I met with the plastic surgeon I am considering for the second time today. I told her I don’t care to keep my nipples. I breastfed my babies and now I’m done with them. I’d love to be able to go braless with my new foobs and not worry about being able to see any nipples through my shirt. She doesn’t agree with my plan. She says I will get a nicer shape by keeping them and then two or three weeks after my surgery she can “shave them off” in her office and stitch me up so nothing will ever poke out. Ouch! Luckily at that point I probably won’t have any (or much) feeling in my chest but that just sounds awful.
So alas, I’m going to get a second opinion. Next month I am meeting a different plastic surgeon who I know did direct to implant reconstruction without keeping the nipples on a woman I have recently connected with. She is happy with her results and I am hoping he will tell me what I want to hear.
At this point surgery will likely be December...maybe even January. Apparently you really want to allow your milk ducts to dry up like real real good after weaning before doing this type of surgery. This is to avoid infection. I’m happy to wait for that reason but also feel like my boobs are ticking time bombs strapped to my chest. I just want to get this over with!
I’m curious to know what others would do in my shoes? Would you want to keep your nipples and aim to have as natural looking of a foob as possible? Or are you like me and want to say ta ta to the nips??
Decisions decisions.
Love and boobies,
Allison
