Search For The Perfect Post Mastectomy Bra
Let’s talk bras. When I was little and had no boobs, I wanted to be grown up and have a reason to wear one. I asked my grandma to buy me one and she did. This was third grade, I believe, so I was 8? I remember my grandfather handed me the plastic bag shyly from the store and spelled out the word b r a. He seemed so embarrassed. Anyway, I wore it to school and stuffed it with socks. Yes, in third grade. There were a few girls who invited me into the bathroom and asked why I was wearing a bra and lifted up my shirt to prove their point. I was caught. I took the socks out and stuffed them in my locker. I wish this story was made up. Haha. It’s totally not.
I finally did get boobs and obviously had a real reason to wear a bra once I was fully developed because I was a D cup. They were uncomfortable but I got used to wearing one. Underwire mostly to support the gals.
Fast forward to 2021 and now I have foobs. I just donated allll my underwire bras. I have no reason for those anymore. I have dreamed about going braless after this surgery but I am not quite there yet. I am still sore and uncomfortable at times and need some basic support. The last six-ish weeks I have bought and returned soooo many bras! Nothing is comfy. Nothing fits right. It has been so frustrating! I hope in the future I can go braless if I have a shirt or dress to wear that would make it hard to wear straps. But for now, I am alternating between these three:
A Hanes simple pull on over the head thin bra for $9.99 from Target. I bought five.
Two random bras from Amazon that zip in the front.
And the best one probably is a Coobie. I have two of these. I tried the OS first (one size) and they were a bit too snug. So then I ordered the Full size and they are perfect. So comfy and look similar enough to a “real” bra. Although these also pull on overhead.
I never would have thought that finding a comfortable bra post mastectomy would be this difficult! Kinda makes me jealous of all my pink sisters that chose to go flat! If you had a mastectomy and found a comfortable bra that works well for you, I would love for you to share it with me in the comments!
Love and foobies,
Allison
